Outside In: Meera Mukherjee and Jaidev Baghel is a new show at Bengaluru that showcases how two artists working in the same medium from very different backgrounds strike common ground.

As you open the door to the exhibition, you instantly notice how the mauve backdrop does perfect justice to showcase the stunning brass pieces of art that are in the spotlight. The juxtaposition of the colour, light and art and how two artists from different times have interpreted the context of modernism and the cultural identity of newly independent India makes this one an interesting visit.

For Outside In, the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), Bengaluru brings together the works of renowned artists Meera Mukherjee (1923–1998) and Jaidev Baghel (1949–2014). These two artists, while working in the same medium, came from very different backgrounds and have used metal to express their being in the world, their emotional landscapes, and their communities. Both artists pushed the medium of metal casting beyond their training, eventually informing their practices in a way that it led to community building and building support structures for others.
