Scalp folliculitis is a common inflammatory skin condition affecting scalp hair follicles that needs special care and attention.

Scalp folliculitis is a common inflammatory skin condition affecting scalp hair follicles. It is usually caused by fungal, bacterial, or yeast infections or factors such as ingrown hair. Usually, it is home-treatable unless the infection spreads. It is not contagious if you don’t share razors, hairbrushes, or towels.

A good hair/scalp care routine not only helps keep the hair healthy but also shiny and strong. However, acne/ folliculitis has been observed recently as common problems on the scalp or on the hairline which can irritate the skin and if not treated on time it can spread across the scalp.

There are a number of home remedies you can use to combat this skin condition. Anti-dandruff shampoo – Washing your scalp with shampoo having antifungal agents, such as ketoconazole, ciclopirox, or tea tree oil, could help.

Antibacterial soap – If scalp folliculitis is along the hairline, washing it twice daily with antibacterial soap is recommended.
Warm compress – Warm compress with a damp cloth a few times a day is recommended in order to soothe inflammation.
Topical or oral antibiotics- Applying antibiotic ointment might help treat the bacterial infection
Topical steroid creams – A cortisone cream will help in soothing inflammation and itching.
Coconut/tea tree oil – They are antibacterial and antifungal and soothe the scalp. But avoid using too much as it might clog the follicles.
Apple Cider Vinegar – It helps soothe and heal the scalp.
Aloe Vera – It contains enzymes that help reduce inflammation and itching.
Triphala Churna – Consuming it regularly for three months and also using it mixed with water as shampoo may help.
